From Tent Poles to Timeless Walls: Studio Cantrell Opens on Canal Road

by Katie Ragland

What’s moving into the longtime gallery space at 24823 Canal Road—and why does it matter if you live (or want to live) on the Gulf Coast?

A new locally rooted art studio + gallery, Studio Cantrell, has opened inside the longtime Canal Road gallery location—carrying forward a decades-long creative legacy while giving the community a fresh reason to stop in, wander, and get inspired.

A familiar address with a brand-new chapter

If you’ve been around Orange Beach for a while, you might recognize the building at 24823 Canal Road as “that art gallery spot.” For years, it was home to the Prosperous Pelican, a packed-to-the-ceiling gallery run by Lee and Nancy Wright (and a go-to place for art sales and browsing).

Later, it evolved into the Pink Pelican—and now it’s officially entered its newest era: Studio Cantrell.

“We’re not blowing away anymore.” (And honestly… relatable.)

The heart of this story is the shift from traveling art-show life to a real, permanent home base.

Nick and Maya Cantrell spent years doing the “load the tent, chase the weather, set up the booth, break it down, do it again” circuit—sometimes up to 20+ shows a year, ranging from the Gulf Coast to places like Virginia Beach and Texas.

When they opened the doors in mid-January, the feeling wasn’t just excitement—it was relief. A real studio means your work is on a wall, not at the mercy of wind and rain. (“It didn’t blow away; it’s all still here,” was basically the vibe the next morning.)

Why locals should care (even if you don’t “know art”)

You don’t have to be an art collector to appreciate what places like this do for a community.

  • They create reasons to get out and explore your own town.

  • They support local creatives and small businesses.

  • They add “texture” to an area—the kind that makes living here feel like more than just beach traffic and grocery runs.

According to the article, the Cantrells plan to feature a mix of local artists and trusted artists they’ve met through years on the circuit—plus the shop will also offer custom framing, which is a big deal if you’ve ever bought art and then let it sit in a closet because framing felt like “a later problem.”

A Gulf Coast reminder you can actually use in real life

I talk to a lot of people who move here for the water (obviously)… but what makes people stay is community.

It’s the places you find on a random Saturday. It’s the “oh wow, I didn’t know this existed” moments. It’s the routines you build that have nothing to do with tourists.

And whether you’re buying, selling, or just settling into life here—knowing the local spots that shape your day-to-day is part of feeling at home.

Want to go check it out? Here’s an easy way to do it

Next time you’re driving down Canal Road, make a point to stop in and wander. Even if you don’t buy a thing, you’ll walk out with that “okay, that was cool” feeling—and those little moments are kind of the point.

If you’re moving to the Gulf Coast (or you’re already here and trying to actually live here, not just exist here), I’m happy to help you build a game plan that fits your real life—not some generic checklist.
